Virtual & In-Person Ways to Engage with The Yamim Noraim
Please know that if it is announced on Sept. 11th that Second Phase move-in is indeed happening, Jewish students will be able to EITHER move in on Sept. 17th (the day prior to Rosh HaShanah eve) so as not to be moving in on the holiday itself OR to move in just after Yom Kippur. In the former option, students will be in “Quiet Period” and unable to leave their dorms during both Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur; in the latter option, students will begin their 14-day quarantine upon arriving on campus but will be housed with other students have have made a similar choice. *For questions about these options, please email

- Rosh HaShanah/Shabbat Torah Talk: You want me to do what?! - Saturday, September 19th @ 3pm
On Rosh Hashanah, we read the famous story about the almost-sacrifice of Isaac by Abraham. Join Rabbinic Intern Talia Kaplan to discuss what could have been and what we might make of this story today. Please register HERE; you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining. - Yizkor: If you’re interested in participating in Yizkor (Remembrance) Services on Yom Kippur--either virtually or in person, please fill out this form to let us know. You can only attend in person if you’re in Brown-approved residence in Providence by the end of August.
- In-Person Services? If you’ve been approved to move into on or off campus housing in Providence by the end of August and are interested in being part of very small in-person services (a minyan/quorum of 10) we’re working to make happen, please fill out this form to let us know if we should count you in!
- Virtual Services from Coast to Coast: HERE is a listing of our recommended virtual Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur services from synagogues and independent communities across the country. Please also consider signing up for Hillel International’s Higher Holidays HERE.
- Hearing the Shofar on Rosh HaShanah: Interested in hearing the shofar? Check out our public shofar blowing times! 12:15pm -- Pembroke Campus, 12:30 -- Keeney Quad, 12:40 -- Wriston Quad, 1:00 -- Young O, 1:30 -- Hillel Terrace
If you live closeby, be sure to have your windows open! Others are welcome to visit any of the quads or Hillel at the appropriate times. - YKACH: Yom Kippur Across College Hill: We’re hoping to have as many members of our (more extended than usual) Brown RISD Hillel family as possible participating in YKACH on the afternoon leading into Yom Kippur, Sunday, Sept. 27 @ 2pm. If you are interested in learning more and in possibly participating in this virtual opportunity to gather in conversation with friends pre-Yom Kippur, please visit this form. YKACH is a catchy title but in Hebrew it’s even more; y’kach, in Hebrew means to take or grab, so please do join us in seizing this opportunity to discuss Action & Awe Amidst Death & Dread - Cultivating Love, Wonder, Justice & Joy As We Look Ahead.
- Close out Yom Kippur Virtually with BRH: Yizkor + (Conservative) Neilah Services (Monday, September 28); Yizkor will be at 6:15pm and Neilah will start around 6:35pm. You’re invited to join virtually HERE.

A Rosh Hashanah offering to the Brown Hillel Community to meaningfully connect with family for the Holidays:
The Mishpacha — High Holy Days 2020 — Interview Game! The High Holy Days offer unique opportunities for Jewish families to come together, celebrate, learn and receive family and cultural legacies. But this year is different. Covid19 is forcing family members apart, increasing isolation and loneliness, particularly among elders. This Interview Game serves as an antidote by safely bringing Mishpacha (Family) members close in vibrant, meaningful conversations that celebrate and foster family bonds, traditions, legacies, and love. Played safely over Zoom (or preferred video chat platform) Interview Games can be recorded and kept as cherished oral histories for life. “The Interview Game has never been more important! It facilitates all the important stories, teachings, and love to pass from Dor l'Dor, generation to generation.” — Rabbi Tirzah Firestone. Visit www.TheInterviewGame.com, and use special discount code BH5871 at checkout for $5 off. Shanah Tova! |
