DIY 500 @ Brown RISD Hillel
DIY 500 is the culmination of this year’s DIY Shabbat initiative. The goal: 500+ Brown and RISD students celebrating Shabbat together over Spring Weekend, April 9-10. The past year wasn’t easy. When Brown RISD Hillel staff and student leaders gathered in August, we thought about the toll social-distancing would have on students’ lives and we wondered, how might we support student wellness by infusing Jewish warmth into students’ experience on College Hill? The answer came to be known as DIY Shabbat. Our first DIY started in August with 30 students, and we have continued to grow each week. We are gathering the community together for a final weekend and our goal is to have 500+ students and guests celebrate Shabbat together. Whether you’re on College Hill or somewhere else, join us for a memorable weekend including:
> Shabbat in the Commons (Friday afternoon): Our weekly Shabbat zoom call led by Rabbi Dardashti, Rabbi & Associate University Chaplain for the Jewish Community, and Elana Nussbaum Cohen ‘23, Vice President of Religious and Spiritual Life. For our final Shabbat in the Commons of the semester, we will be honoring the class of 2021. Join us for words, blessings, and toasts from our seniors!
> DIY Shabbat (Friday night): Our Shabbat initiative where students host and attend intimate Shabbat dinners around campus. We provide the food, and you create a Shabbat experience that feels authentic to you. Swing by the building on Friday to pick up challah, grape juice, conversation-starters and swag! Sign up here!
> Hillel House of Blues (Saturday night): tune in for an evening of musical entertainment by our talented student artists.*Setlist coming soon*
