“When I was looking at colleges one of the most important things for me was what Jewish life would be like on campus. I went to Jewish Day School growing up and Jewish summer camp, and I was lucky enough to grow up in a family where our Jewish identity was important and strong and fostered. I came to campus looking for a way to connect, and keep my Jewish identity strong while also pushing it further, and I found that at Hillel. |
I was able to both nurture my Judaism and push myself in much different directions than I ever could have anticipated in college. At Hillel I was able to find leadership positions that taught me not only how to think about and build Jewish community, what’s important to that community and the different tensions inherent in building community, but also important leadership skills like time management, organization and communication and how to inspire leadership in others and enable others to be part of the community that I care so much about. One of the other amazing things about Hillel is that it’s helped me connect to the broader Providence Jewish community. The local community is really interesting with a lot of synagogues that I can go to and work at, families in town that will take me in and have me over for Shabbat dinners and meals, and I was able to find a lot of those connections through the staff and older students at Hillel. This community has been a home for me, has nurtured me Jewishly and has pushed me to think about important questions relating to my Judaism, how observant I want to be, and what parts of Judaism mean the most to me, and I’ve found that through my conversations with the staff, my time on leadership, my connections with other students and the wonderful programming that happens that I’ve thrived.”
